The LEAVES project is focused on developing an online service that supports older adults when dealing with grief as the result of losing their spouse. In LEAVES, end-users are guided through their grief journey by the conversational agent Sun. LEAVES will be implemented and evaluated in three countries (the Netherlands, Switzerland and Portugal) in order to test its clinical effect, to assess its business case, and to evaluate the end-user experience. The project has a clear focus on market exploitation.

Figure 1: The LEAVES Virtual "Sun" Companion introduces itself.

The dialogue that Sun provides is powered by the WOOL platform. Sun is used to provide the onboarding, to act as the ‘glue’ between the different modules that LEAVES provides, and to administer the different questionnaires within the LEAVES service (e.g., to monitor the end-user’s mental health).

Project Information: LEAVES is a project, funded by the AAL Programme under project number AAL-2019-6-168-CP with funding by the European Union and the national funding agencies from the Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland: The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMW), Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), and Innosuisse – Swiss Innovation Agency. The project is running from February 2020 until February 2023 and includes partners from three European countries: Roessingh Research and Development (NL), the National Foundation for the Elderly (NL), the University of Bern (CH), the School of Social Work, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Olten (CH), Nothing AG (CH), NOVA university of Lisbon (PT), the Psychiatric department at the Health Unit of Baixo Alentejo (PT), Sensing Future Technologies (PT), and DELA (NL).
